My Foray Into the World of Online Dating

Foray: to make a raid or brief invastion

With one small exception back a few years ago that ended somewhat awkwardly with a handsome Siberian boy who taught at the MTC, liked to ice skate and laughed at the hardships my grandmother faced growing up (I'm pretty sure the last part was because of nerves), I have not been big into online dating. I always thought it was for people like the guy in Brad Paisley's video for "Online".

But let's face it folks, I'm 32 and my last real date was a year ago. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I decided to forego the LDS Singles type sites, did a little research and signed up for precisely 2 websites (I hear if you're going to sign up you should do two sites). I tried making myself likeable without being desperate, funny without being stupid, stuff like that. I also tried picking out a decent picture of me for my profile. I chose the one of myself outside the Russian Team Room- it's a fave and it's recent.

Oh- and while we're talking about dating site profile pictures- seriously? Some of the guys (and I'm assuming girls as well) must have put precisely zero thought to their profile picture. I'm trying not to be shallow, but if the whole point of dating websites is to help people find someone to spend their life (or at least the next 6 or 7 months) with, then shouldn't you choose a picture that makes you appealing? Guys- pictures of you shirtless and muscely make you look more gay than appealing to the ladies and pictures of you in your hunting gear holding the severed head of a 6-point buck while the carcass is still in the picture probably aren't going to help you get what you want.

Anyways, one day I was on site #1 and saw a profile for a nice young LDS guy up in Washington (I'm trying to broaden my opportunities), so I sent him a little mini-questionnaire and he answered a week or so ago. I didn't know what I was/am supposed to do next if I liked his answers, so I hadn't done anything yet in response.

Well, then tonight, I get an email from site #2 saying it had selected young men who they felt would be compatible with me. And wouldn't you know it- the nice young LDS guy up in Washington from site #1 was one of them? It said our profiles match 71% or some other number that I am sure was calculated very scientifically. So, I sent him an email saying I was 71% certain we should be friends.

So, I realize that this admission may open me up for mocking, but whatev. The mid-singles ward here was just a little too weird for me, so I'm gonna try this for a while and see if something at least mildly interesting or blog-worthy comes of it.

Cheers!

Good luck! I think it is great that you're trying to broaden your social circle. And I agree with the picture thing. I would rather not date a shirless guy or a deer head.

You have such a way with words.... Very clever to add the 71% thing on your email. Good for you!

Woo-hoo! That sounds great! Sorry I didn't call you back last week. We were actually driving to SLC when you called because my parents surprised us and got home from their mission five months early. Yee-haw! Anyway, I will call you back asap! Love ya!

All i have to say is.. i don't like on-line dating. i think in can be very dangerous. But i've had several friends get married to someone they found online. all i can say is date for a very long time face to face (i know it sounds like a no brainer) before marrying someone you met online. And i don't have fears for your safety. You're smart and i'm sure won't do anything to put yourself in danger like first time meetings in dark dreary ally's. Or letting them know where you live. It's all about time baby.

I love you, my friend who understands!! You are so worthy...worthy of respect and loyalty (like you outlined previously) and so may there be a man (online or elsewhere) who can offer that to you!

online dating is how people meet now. maybe it was sketchy back in 1996 but now everyone is online, not just the weirdies. i say keep at it and keep us posted.
