My Thoughts On People's Perspectives

So, there is an outside chance I may be moving to New York City. It's nothing much right now, but the possibility is there. I have applied to the New York Teaching Fellows program and have been invited for an interview. The long and short of it is this: they have a hard time getting teachers for certain subjects to teach in high-risk schools, so they take professionals, put them in teaching positions after some training and while they are teaching, the State of New York subsidizes a masters in education.

Anyways, I have a couple of friends who live with their husbands and children in NYC. One of them, Marci, has had a couple of her friends who are in similar situations (30+, single, LDS) email me about living there. Holy cow- their attitudes could not be more different! One girl, Jamie, thinks it is a great place to be if you're older and single and LDS. She seems really jazzed about all the possibilities NYC has to offer and is really encouraging of the idea of moving there. The other, Sonya, seems pretty bitter about being single and LDS and living in NYC. She said the only good thing is that she doesn't feel judged for not being married. She said she got nothing out of the activities, and that the singles wards aren't that different there. I just got a really negative vibe about living in NYC from her.

I just think it is interesting that two people in relatively similar life situations can have such vastly different perspectives.

Anyways, I'm heading to NYC next month to interview. Who knows- I may decide I don't want to live there or I may decide that it isn't in the plans for me. But for now, the idea of it is kind of exciting!

It sounds to me like the second person is bitter with her life situation, not so much about NYC itself. I loved NYC and I could totally see you fitting in there. Maybe someday they'll make a movie out of your amazing teaching ability. (think finding forrester or lean on me).
