My Sunday

So, I think everyone who reads this is LDS or familiar with the LDS church, but if not, let me preface this blog entry with a little information. One Sunday a month, typically the first Sunday, members are asked to go without food and drink for 24 hours (fasting). They are then asked to take the monetary value of what they have gone without and contribute it to the church for administering to the poor (food, clothing, helping with bills, etc.). Sacrament meeting is the longest part of our 3 hour block of service- all the members meet together and partake of the sacrament and hear from one another. That particular Sunday, instead of a sacrament meeting with talks and musical numbers and the like, members are invited to come and bear witness of what they know and believe to be true. Any questions?

Yesterday was one of those testimony meetings where I was really glad to have my bag of Primary things because if I didn't, I surely would have laughed out loud at a couple of testimonies and for that, I'm pretty sure I would've gone to hell.

Let me just start by saying that 90% of testimony meeting was fantastic! My congregation is generally really good about that kind of thing. But, then one person not in my congregation gets up and tells a 7-8 minute story (and I promise it was a story) and then proceeds to ask everyone to fast and pray for her son, known to almost no one in the room. It would be one thing if people knew her son, it would be another if he was suffering some fatal disease, it would yet be another if she went to friends individually and made the same request. I just thought it was several levels of inappropriate to handle it the way she did. Oh, and nowhere in there did she approach the level of saying what she knew or even believed to be true. That was the other thing that bugged me.

Then, another person got up and started talking about how after having 3 or 4 babies, she had her tubes tied but then she met her current husband and before they got married, he asked her to have his baby, and so they went to the doctor, and wouldn't you know it, you can get your tubes untied, so they did!

I don't know what other people think is appropriate to say in sacrament meeting, but I sat there slackjawed at these two. You are welcome to disagree, and I do not want to offend, so forgive me if I have upset anyone.

Oh, and then in Primary, I learned the following things:

-The bishop's job is to pay the bills.
-One little girl's father is God.
-Another little girl was the first one to come out of her mom's bladder.

I love church!
